Mommiesfirst for Mommies First (Time)

mommiesfirst

As you can clearly can tell by now, I thoroughly enjoy finding the best kiddie products out there, as well as new and amazing businesses as I take pride in helping other parents, so naturally when I was introduced to this new idea I fell inlove with it and had to share!

As a new parent or an expectant parent, you have NO CLUE what to expect and what each baby stage brings, not to mention with the amount of baby products on the market (6 brands of one type of product – yikes) it can be sooooo overwhelming and Mommiesfirst helps with that by taking some of the guess work out of it. Like a magazine subscription, you select a membership plan of 3 months, 6 months or 12 months (or better yet you can gift it) shipping is free and monthly you will get a box in the mail with 4-5 great brand must-have products that will help you with all those tough stages, baby or no baby. These boxes are 100% tailored to you and your baby by filling out some information when choosing your membership.

mommiesfirst

Lucky for me, a while back I was asked to be part of the Mommiesfirst council to help test out products to make sure they are good enough for all those getting the care packages and I excitedly accepted and have enjoyed very much being part of this council. I can promise you up and down that only products that get raving reviews from the council members go in the packages and I know that because I had a pretty bad experience with one of the products to which I expressed my dissatisfaction and it was not included in the box. That shows me that they really do care and that is enough for me to stand behind this company (not to mention the founder, Lorena, is such a wonderful caring mom and business owner who just “gets it”).

Think about it as getting a fun present every month since you don’t know what is coming – YES PLEASE!

Get in the Know!

I am here to help dispel myths around insurance! Nope, I don’t work for an insurance company, but between home insurance, car insurance and life insurance (and I am sure there are many more types of insurance that I don’t know about yet), I tend to get a little confused. <awkward>

I was asked to answer a few questions about insurance and although some answers I knew, there were a lot of things I hadn’t realized until now. TEST YOURSELF: below are the questions, try answering them and then compare your answers to the actual answer and see how much you know:

Question 1: Are Ontarian’s paying more for auto-insurance, but getting less coverage?
My Answer: I remember being told about the different insurance policies and thinking that it was a lot of money for really not very much coverage. I keep reading in the news that premiums are very high and insurance companies are cutting the coverages that they offer which nobody likes.
Actual Answer is here: http://www.getintheknow.ibc.ca/explain/7_some_ontarians_think_theyre_paying_more_for_insurance_and_getting_less_coverage_
*Clearly, my thoughts were correct.

Question 2: Is the money I pay for insurance set aside just for me to cover any claims I may have in the future?
My Answer: This answer I know – NO!
Actual Answer is here: http://www.getintheknow.ibc.ca/explain/1_is_the_money_i_pay_for_insurance_set_aside_just_for_me_to_cover_any_claims_i_may_have_in_the_future
* I guess I never really thought about where all this money I am paying goes when not claiming for any injuries and well now I know that no matter what, you are still being protected in the end

Question 3: Is flood damage caused by a spring thaw covered by your home insurance?
My answer: Yes, my thought is flooding is flooding and I think we are covered for it.
Actual Answer is here: http://www.getintheknow.ibc.ca/explain/4_is_flood_damage_caused_by_a_spring_thaw_covered_by_your_home_insurance
*I am actually quite shocked at this answer! I would think you would be covered as flooding is common especially with some of these crazy rainstorms we have and therefore you would be covered, but clearly I am very wrong.

Although this post has generously been sponsored by the Insurance Bureau of Canada, the opinions and language are all my own, and in no way do they reflect the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

The Name Says it All …

Treadsanity … need I say more :)

So as I have mentioned in previous posts, I have never been a big lover of working out and only recently I have been finding amazing classes that actually make me look forward to working out and this class is no exception.

I would be lying if I said I was NEVER a runner, I used to compete in track in JR school hahaha (for those who dont know me, that was a looooooong time ago – I just aged myself I know) and well I gave it up when I went to high school and only recently starting running again because of my interest in this specific class. So needless to say, I would still never define myself as a runner so dont think you have to be to try out this class.

Here’s how it works (changes every class but you will get the idea):
You either start on the treadmill or on the floor (it’s a ‘must’ for me to start on the treadmill, the one time I started on the floor was a little bit of a disaster once I got onto the treadmill) and you have 10 minute intervals. First I must say, that the music is loud, fun and pumps you up … at least for the first 5 minutes ;)
- The instructor (Jason or Alex) will call out walker, jogger and runner intervals and you start there. Every minute or two, they will change up the interval and incline and get you to push your limits. Of course, you can go as slow or as fast as you want, they just give you recommened intervals.
- After the 10 minutes is up, you swap! I am then on the floor doing an intense leg/core exercise for 10 minutes
- Swap again and I am back on the treadmill doing a massive incline walk/jog for 10 minutes
- Swap again to the floor and I am doing an arm/core workout with weights (usually 3lb/5lb/8lb weights)
- Swap again and I am now finishing my last 5-8 minutes pushing my absolute limit running as fast as I can (which I will admittedly say isnt very fast) for 1 minute and then slowing down for 1 minute and so on
- Swap one more time and I am finishing up on the floor with an ab/core workout and finally it’s time to stretch (at this point I am thinking “YES ITS OVER”).
Intense right?! It is an amazing workout and after every class I feel like I have conquered yet another class and it gets easier and easier to push your intervals further every week and this is what gets me coming back the next week. I am just so proud of myself!

Im the one in purple on the treadmill

Classes Available:
BarreSanity – Ballet meets body sculpting. Created in L.A this class is designed to sculpt and lean the body with light weights, core stability and more. Using a Ballet Barre, the class will have you feeling muscles you’ve never felt before.

TreadSanity – Explained above and you can burn between 500 – 900 calories per class.

Zumba – Self explanatory :) Everyone has fun in this class!

SpinSanity – Not your regular spin class. Getting on and off the bike in 10 minute intervals to do core work, weights and much more. This class is designed to hit every single muscle group.

TRX – They use TRX in many of their classes including TreadSanity and SpinSanity – I dont really know how to explain this, but it is quite a challenge

Who Doesn’t Love Music – GIVEAWAY

Now I am not sure if Frankie’s love for music is because I started him in music classes at such a young age (well let’s be honest, I really joined the classes for myself to meet other mom’s and to get out of the house mid winter), but none-the-less my little guy loves nothing more than dancing to music (crumping to be exact – I think that is the only way to describe it) and I truly have Mark Weinstock to thank for that. We have been in Mark’s music class for the last year and a half and my son just adores him.

I came home from work one day and quietly made my way to the basement and there he was dancing to Mark’s cd, infact he was even singing to the music … yes singing! He learned some of the words and babbled his way through the rest of the song knowing the tune. I don’t think I have laughed harder in my entire life. No joke, I actually find myself singing the music at least once a week, I even caught myself singing it out loud :)

It seems to be a routine in this household to have a morning solo music class in our basement before I go to work .. just me, Frankie and his BFF tita J.

Listening to Mark’s CD, Frankie picked up his guitar and pretended to be Mark

For those of you who don’t know Mark, he is VERY talented and his music classes are a lot of fun! There are some music teachers that don’t adapt their music to the age group, but not Mark and I can say that from experience. One of my favorite things about him is that he brings interesting musical instruments from all around the world which really captures the kids attention.

At music class

GRAVITATE to Working Out

Let me start off by saying that I wasnt born with the “working out” gene! Infact, I despised the thought of working out until I had Frankie and even after then it took quite a bit of time for me to get my head wrapped around the idea of having to workout in order to lose the final pounds I had put on while pregnant.

I have been working out with a trainer for a little over a year now and as much as I love the push to have to go to workout, a girlfriend of mine told me I had to come with her to this studio called Gravitate to try a Gravity pilates class and I have to say I was pleasantly shocked how much I enjoyed the class considering I hate working out so much (hence why I needed a trainer). I have to say I am now truly addicted!!!! Can I tell you that I NEVER believed those people who said they were addicted to working out, it just didnt make sense to me … until now. The Kardashian’s (yes openly admitting I love watching their show) made pilates classes look easy, I dont even think they broke a sweat, but that is not the case, what a great full body workout and I am definitely feeling it today (3 days later).

That’s me in the middle

An Edible Loot Bag Idea! GIVEAWAY

I know nobody is saying it out loud, but everybody wants props on a “wicked loot bag” that the kids absolutely LOVED and considering we go to a dozen plus birthday’s a year its hard to find a unique item to give out to say “thanks for coming to my birthday”

A idea was presented to me and I thought it would be great for loots bags, either alone or with a few other things – a COOKIE! We all know the kids love them (and frankly do the adults). Depending on budget, you can do a bag of little custom cookies or a big custom cookie in lieu of a loot bag or you can do a regular custom cookie to add to the loot bag. For the mom’s and dad’s worried about allergies, not to fret, they are nut FREE which is very important to me because my son has a peanut allergy.

So now lets talk cookies (mmm my favorite subject)! I like to think of myself as a cookie connoisseur because I just looooove cookies – trust me I will never turn down a cookie. I was given the opportunity to try The Dutchess of Dough sugar cookies and O-M-G they were beyond delicious! I know you all think a sugar cookie is a sugar cookie is a sugar cookie, but honestly, you say that until you try these!!! My husband and I kept sharing the cookies we were given to try so that we didnt run out of them quickly – that’s how good they were. Then when I was at Pusateri’s (of course in the desert section), I saw a bag of the cookies and got soooo excited and now when we are going for dinner at friend’s houses, we bring these instead of wine.

GIVEAWAY:
Thank you to our friends at The Dutchess of Dough, they are generously giving away a dozen 3″ custom sugar cookies with or without your child’s name on it to one of my lucky readers (i’m already jealous of the winner).
HOW TO ENTER:

2. Sign up for my newsletter at www.babylishadvice.com main page (along the right side)
3. Email me at terri@babylishadvice.com to let me know you have done both

Hiring A Nanny? Wee Care!! GIVEAWAY

The months leading up to having our son, I had recieved quite a few emails from friends and friends of friends asking if anyone knew of a nanny looking for work. I actually wondered at one point if it was really that hard to find a nanny and then that got me very nervous.

A few months after having Frankie, my husband and I started talking about whether to send him to daycare or hire a caregiver and hiring a caregiver found to be the best option for us. The first question I asked myself was “where do I start”, talk about stress!!! Per usual I did my research and it seemed amongst a lot of my friends and family, there was a common theme … Wee Care Placement Agency.

I immediately called Wee Care with my enormous list of questions and Robyn went through each one with me answering them all and then walked me through the process of sponsoring. She told me what to expect with timing and kept me posted along the way (I have to admit, I was emailing her all the time with the “are we there yet” question). All in all she found our family the most wonderful person that really couldnt be a better fit!!  The minute she met Frankie, it was if they had known eachother in a previous life, he instantly wanted to go to her and now when she leaves the room, he cries!

Daily, I thank my lucky stars for having JJ in our lives and I really do have Wee Care to thank for that.

I am not sure many people know about this, but Wee Care has a sister company called ‘In A Pinch’ which is a great company for backup childcare and babysitting services. For those new mom and dads out there, this is a great way to get a few moments to yourselves or enjoy a nice date night.

Thank you to our friends at Wee Care, they have given me one of their AMAZING books/manuals to give away to one of my lucky readers. For those of you who have recently hired or are planning to hire a nanny (or even those of you who have someone that comes to you to babysit), this is a great giveaway for you! This book has whole section that you fill in detailed information about your child (ie. likes/dislikes with food, games, sleep and food schedule, allergies, best ways to soothe your child etc) and there are even tips on crafts to do (for those rainy days inside), songs to sing and cooking fun around the house. This really is a g reat “how to” tool for your new caregiver getting to know your child.

Here’s how to enter:
1. ‘like’ the Babylish Advice Page on Facebook
2. signup for my newsletter found on www.babylishadvice.com
3. email me at terri@babylishadvice.com to let me know you have done both

The Cake Smash Photo Shoot

Talk about fun … this was by far one of the most fun moments for both my husband and I and Frankie. I kept seeing pictures all over Facebook of these amazing cake smash photo sessions and inquired about the photographer. Once I only heard great things, I immediately booked my photo session for Frankie’s first birthday (obviously knowing me, I booked this months before his birthday). After spending weeks trying to figure out what he was going to wear (I can’t believe I am actually admitting that), the day finally arrived!

Hope (she is the photographer) from h2photo showed up with all her gear, set up in my living room and we were ready to go. First she took a few pictures of my husband and I with Frankie to get him comfortable with the camera and then we gave him the cake. I built this moment up in my head for so long thinking he would just destroy the cake (as he does with everything else) and I am pretty sure he was just confused. He touched it ever so gently to make sure it wasnt a toy and then he took one finger, swiped the icing, tried it and continued to just to eat the icing. Luckily, Hope had a few tricks up her sleeve and he started getting into the cake and then had sooooo much fun playing with it.

I am sure you all can agree that the worst part of getting a photo shoot done is waiting to see the pictures!!! Within a day or two, Hope sends you a “sneak peak” of your pictures and then within a few weeks (depending on how busy she is) she will send you the rest of the pictures. I absolutely fell inlove with all the pictures she took so I purchased the entire disc from her which was extra, but sooooo worth it.

I thought she did such a wonderful job and was so easy to work with that I bought a close friend a cake smash photoshoot for her son’s first birthday. If your looking for a fun, unique gift, here it is! This one will last a lifetime!!!

Hope is so sweet, she is offering my readers a special deal:
On location Cake Smash $100 session fee + $30 cake + $100 for 2 digital images = Regularly $230. For Babylish Readers $130
In Studio Cake Smash $50 session fee + $30 cake + $100 for 2 digital image = Regularly $180. For Babylish Readers $80

Here are a bunch of the pictures of the cake smash (it was hard to choose just one)

Custom Cards for All Occasions

I dont know about you, but I love when I get something OTHER than bills in the mail. That is why I absolutely loved the idea of sending everyone an invitaion to Frankie’s first birthday, old school style .. by mail! Without a thought, I called Lauren Silverberg from Six Apples.

I had absolutely zero idea what I wanted them to look like, so I just told her that the theme was Halloween and to do whatever she wanted. I can’t begin to explain how AMAZING they looked!!! I wish I could have taken some credit for the design, but I had no part of it. Without any exaggeration, I think almost every person who replied to the party had asked where I bought the invitations (I guess they thought I bought them at a store), but nope, I can proudly say they are a Frankie K. original design by Lauren.

She designs cards for all occassions: party invites (children or adult), shower invites, thank you cards (she did mine), birth announcements and engagement/wedding invitations just to name a few.

The picture below is of his invitaion… it’s hard to see because of the lighting, but the background is a half moon (just a side note: there are two spots on the invite that look like they have been coloured in, well that’s because I just coloured them prior to posting this pic)

For those who are starting new business ventures or want to rebrand, the other half of Lauren’s business is developing branding; that is logo’s and websites along with print like pamphlets and business cards. I have seen Lauren’s work and her creativity is incredible. Check it out for yourself, her website is http://www.sixapples.com/.

Lauren is beyond talented, I absolutely HIGHLY recommend using her!!!
